Founded in Estoril in 1959 by Bernardo Pinto Basto de Lencastre, Antique was born from a passion for beauty and the belief that certain things, when made with time and intention, never go out of style.

Its original location on Avenida de Nice, decorated by interior designer Pedro Leitão, quickly became a reference point for those in search of unique gifts and a refined lifestyle. It attracted a discerning clientele that included notable families from Estoril and Cascais – such as the Fierros and the Patiños – as well as European aristocracy, international tastemakers, and legendary names like Helena Rubinstein and the Counts of Barcelona.

In 1997, a second chapter began with the opening of a new address in Lisbon, inside the iconic Ritz Four Seasons Hotel. Surrounded by a unique collection of mid-century Portuguese art and framed by warm boiserie interiors designed by Graça Viterbo, this space became Antique’s Flagship Store – and a tribute to all that the brand represents: savoir-faire, tradition, and timelessness.

Today, Antique remains a family business. It is now in the hands of Luísa Lencastre, third generation and a curator in the truest sense of the word. With a trained eye and an innate sense of harmony, Luísa personally selects each object, ensuring that every piece speaks the language of elegance, craftsmanship, and emotion that defines the brand. From jewellery to silver animal sculptures, from leather goods to unexpected decorative objects, every piece in the collection reflects a belief in enduring beauty, in things made slowly, with purpose and skill.

LUÍSA LENCASTRE

Behind the brand

Luísa Lencastre is both the Creative Director and Curator of Antique. Embodying the 3rd generation of the family business, Luísa was born and raised in Estoril, on the coastline north of Lisbon, Portugal, being exposed to foreign cultures from an early age, not only because of her parents traveler nature, but also due to the international component of her academic upbringing.

Having lived in India, Istanbul and several European cities, Luísa became a nomad herself, which enhanced her love for travel, one of her main sources of inspiration. But inspiration often comes from the little things in life and Luísa has that rare ability of finding it anywhere from a shell, a semi-precious stone, a fabric, an embroidery, a pattern, to something as prosaic as vegetables or a piece of fruit.

Every single object available at Antique was hand-picked by Luísa within a curatorship process dictated by her Eastern style with a spritz of modern. This involves an ongoing quest for the absolute best products and suppliers available, especially in Portugal, as Luísa is a big defender of her country’s traditional crafts and their preservation, as they play a vital role in cultivating its cultural heritage and identity.

Most recently, Luísa’s excellent curatorship skills inspired her into creating her own brand, a luxury lifestyle brand that develops curated collections in the worlds of beauty, fashion accessories and home décor.
